  • Leaky Bladders and Weight: A New Connection with Menopause?

Larrian on March 18th, 2008 | Filed under Women's Health

incontinenceThose extra pounds hitching a ride on your anatomy during perimenopause/menopause can significantly increase incontinence, according to a new study published in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Researchers involved in the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation ( SWHAN ) looked at a 6 year following of women with mild incontinence in midlife and found
that for every 10 pounds gained, a woman’s risk of worsening her incontinence went up 44%. Conversely, maintaining our weight at a healthy BMI improved the symptoms of incontinence by the same rate. Hormones, a popular therapy for incontinence, seem to have little to do with these results.

When you realize that over $475 million dollars were spent in 2002 on urinary incontinence products alone, not to mention their impact on our trash heaps, we could be looking at a gold mine just by shedding 10% of our body weight! Gaining weight above a BMI of 25 for your body is like stealing your wealth…and that’s all wet!
