  • Women Lose Muscle Mass Without Estradiol

weights.jpgIt’s not your fault if you find it’s harder to stay in shape as we age, according to a study published online. Women simply don’t use protein as effectively as men to maintain our teeny tiny biceps and other muscles, especially if your estradiol level hovers around 10pg/ml. Talk about ovaries gone 2 claws up!

Men, God bless them, can store protein in their muscles at any age, while women become 10pg weaklings without the addition of estradiol in menopause. Even in early middle age, women lose more muscle than men because of fluctuating hormone levels and premature menopause. But here’s some good news: women simply need to eat more protein (the researchers specifically recommended meat and eggs), do resistance exercise and maintain an estradiol level around 70 if they want to pummel old age. Now that’s my kind of diet…literally. The Menopause Diet contains loads of references to the importance of protein, not carbs, in a woman’s hormonal balance. Protein manipulates the breakdown of estradiol into the least carcinogenic pathway, while high glycemic carbs ( the sugars, starches that don’t contain fiber) swiftly stimulate the estrogen receptors into a hyperkinetic fit.

Muscle weakness and loss makes you less mobile and more susceptible to doing a face plant and breaking precious bones - which can lead to death. No kidding. Half of elderly people who suffer a serious fall die within two years. Just remember George Burns…broke a hip and was dead in six months. Okay…he was 100, but science is predicting we may be able to live for a decade or more after 100. If you need more proof…just watch how many people OVER 100 ol’ Willard Scott is sending birthday greetings to each year.

In my latest bookThe Complete Idiot’s Guide to Total Nutrition Cooking you’ll find an entire chapter on eggs and how to prepare them so they don’t bear a striking resemblance to rubber. You’ll also find good carb recipes, quick and easy meals and loads of simple but deliciously nutritious menu plans for the entire family. After all, it takes a kitchen to raise a family.
